Hip Replacement

What is hip replacement?

Hip replacement is a surgical procedure used to treat severe hip arthritis or joint damage that has not responded to non-surgical treatment. The damaged ball and socket of the hip joint are removed and replaced with prosthetic components designed to restore smooth, pain-free movement.

Dr Varun Arora performs hip replacement surgery for patients across Melbourne and regional Victoria, aiming to reduce pain and help patients return to daily activities.

What is involved in hip replacement?

Preparation of the bone

The damaged femoral head (the 'ball' of the joint) is removed, and the hip socket (acetabulum) is reshaped to accept the new implant.

Implantation

A prosthetic stem and head are fitted into the femur, and a prosthetic cup is fitted into the reshaped socket, together forming the new joint surfaces.

Alignment and testing

Careful attention is given to the alignment and length of the leg, and to the stability of the joint, before the incision is closed.

Your recovery

Most patients begin walking with assistance soon after surgery, with the support of the physiotherapy team. Rehabilitation continues over subsequent weeks and months as strength and mobility are restored.

General risks overview

As with any surgical procedure, hip replacement carries risks. Potential risks and complications can include:

  • Infection

  • Blood clots (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism)

  • Dislocation of the new joint

  • Leg length changes

  • Implant wear or loosening

  • Nerve or blood vessel injury

  • Risks associated with anaesthesia

This is a general overview and not a complete list. Dr Arora will discuss the risks and benefits relevant to your individual case in detail.
