PCL Tear
What is a PCL tear?
A PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) tear is an injury to the ligament that helps prevent the shin bone from moving too far backward relative to the thigh bone. PCL tears are less common than ACL tears and often result from higher-energy trauma.
Dr Varun Arora assesses and treats patients with PCL tears across Melbourne and regional Victoria.
Symptoms
Common symptoms of a PCL tear include:
Pain, particularly at the back of the knee
Swelling
Stiffness
A feeling of instability
Difficulty walking, especially downhill or downstairs
Causes and risk factors
A PCL tear can develop for a number of reasons, including:
A direct blow to the front of the shin with the knee bent, such as in a motor vehicle accident
A fall onto a bent knee
Hyperextension injuries during sport
Treatment options for a PCL tear
Treatment for a PCL tear depends on the severity of the injury and whether other structures within the knee are also affected.
Non-surgical treatment
Many PCL tears, particularly isolated or lower-grade injuries, can be managed without surgery through:
Bracing
Physiotherapy and graduated strengthening
Activity modification during healing
Surgical treatment
Surgical reconstruction is generally reserved for more severe PCL tears, ongoing instability, or injuries involving multiple ligaments.
If surgical reconstruction is required, Dr Arora will discuss the most appropriate approach for your specific injury during your consultation.
