MCL Tear
What is an MCL tear?
An MCL (medial collateral ligament) tear is an injury to the ligament that runs along the inner side of the knee, providing stability against inward-bending forces. MCL injuries are common in contact sports and often occur alongside other knee injuries.
Dr Varun Arora assesses and treats patients with MCL tears across Melbourne and regional Victoria.
Symptoms
Common symptoms of an MCL tear include:
Pain and tenderness on the inner side of the knee
Swelling
Bruising
A feeling of instability, particularly with side-to-side movement
Causes and risk factors
An MCL tear can develop for a number of reasons, including:
A direct blow to the outer side of the knee
Twisting injuries during sport
Sudden changes of direction
Treatment options for an MCL tear
Treatment for an MCL tear depends on the severity (grade) of the injury and whether other structures in the knee are also affected.
Non-surgical treatment
The majority of MCL tears heal well without surgery, with treatment generally including:
Bracing to protect the ligament while it heals
Physiotherapy and graduated strengthening
Activity modification during the healing period
Surgical treatment
Surgical treatment is uncommon for isolated MCL tears, and is generally reserved for severe, complete tears or cases involving combined injury to other knee ligaments.
If surgical repair or reconstruction is required, Dr Arora will discuss the most appropriate approach for your specific injury during your consultation.
