LCL Tear
What is an LCL tear?
An LCL (lateral collateral ligament) tear is an injury to the ligament running along the outer side of the knee, which helps stabilise the joint against outward-bending forces. LCL injuries are less common than other knee ligament injuries and often occur alongside other structural damage.
Dr Varun Arora assesses and treats patients with LCL tears across Melbourne and regional Victoria.
Symptoms
Common symptoms of an LCL tear include:
Pain and tenderness on the outer side of the knee
Swelling
A feeling of instability
Difficulty putting weight through the leg
Causes and risk factors
An LCL tear can develop for a number of reasons, including:
A direct blow to the inner side of the knee
Twisting injuries
Hyperextension of the knee
Treatment options for an LCL tear
Treatment for an LCL tear depends on the severity of the injury and whether it occurs in isolation or alongside other ligament injuries.
Non-surgical treatment
Lower-grade LCL tears are often managed without surgery, through:
Bracing
Physiotherapy and graduated strengthening
Activity modification during healing
Surgical treatment
Complete LCL tears, or those occurring alongside other ligament injuries, may require surgical repair or reconstruction to restore stability.
If surgical repair or reconstruction is required, Dr Arora will discuss the most appropriate approach for your specific injury during your consultation.
