Hip Resurfacing

What is hip resurfacing?

Hip resurfacing is an alternative to total hip replacement in which the femoral head is reshaped and capped with a smooth metal covering, rather than being removed entirely. This approach preserves more of the patient's natural bone.

Hip resurfacing is suitable for carefully selected patients and Dr. Varun Arora can advise you whether this option may be suitable for you based on your bone quality, age, and activity level.

What is involved in hip resurfacing?

Preparation of the femoral head

Rather than removing the femoral head as in a total hip replacement, the surgeon trims and reshapes it to accept a smooth metal cap.

Implantation

The femoral head is capped with a metal covering, and the hip socket is fitted with a corresponding metal cup.

Alignment and testing

The joint is checked for alignment, movement, and stability before the incision is closed.

Your recovery

Recovery follows a similar general pattern to hip replacement, with walking and physiotherapy commencing soon after surgery under the guidance of the care team.

General risks overview

As with any surgical procedure, hip resurfacing carries risks. Potential risks and complications can include:

  • Infection

  • Blood clots

  • Dislocation

  • Fracture of the femoral neck

  • Risks specific to metal-on-metal implant designs, where relevant

  • Nerve or blood vessel injury

  • Risks associated with anaesthesia

This is a general overview and not a complete list. Dr Arora will discuss the risks and benefits relevant to your individual case in detail.

Hip Resurfacing Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a suitable candidate for hip resurfacing?

Suitability depends on factors including bone quality, age, and activity level, and will be assessed individually by Dr Arora.

How is hip resurfacing different from a total hip replacement?

Resurfacing reshapes and caps the femoral head rather than removing it, preserving more natural bone.
