Hip Dysplasia

What is hip dysplasia?

Hip dysplasia is a condition in which the hip socket (acetabulum) does not fully cover the femoral head, due to a shallow or malformed socket. It may be present from birth or become apparent during growth, and can lead to joint instability and premature wear if left untreated.

Dr Varun Arora assesses and treats adolescent and adult patients with hip dysplasia across Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of hip dysplasia include:

  • Hip or groin pain

  • A feeling of instability in the hip

  • A limp

  • Symptoms that often first appear in adolescence or young adulthood

Causes and risk factors

Hip dysplasia can develop for a number of reasons, including:

  • Developmental factors present from birth

  • Family history of hip dysplasia

  • Underlying joint laxity

Treatment options for hip dysplasia

Treatment for hip dysplasia depends on the degree of the deformity, the patient's age, and whether secondary arthritis has developed.

Non-surgical treatment

In mild cases, non-surgical management may be appropriate, including:

  • Physiotherapy

  • Activity modification

  • Ongoing monitoring with imaging

Surgical treatment

For more significant dysplasia, or where symptoms progress, surgical treatment may be recommended:

  • Pelvic Acetabular Osteotomy — may be recommended for eligible younger patients with preserved joint cartilage, to reposition the socket and improve coverage of the femoral head.

  • Hip Replacement — may be recommended for patients who have developed significant secondary arthritis as a result of long-standing dysplasia.

Hip Dysplasia Frequently Asked Questions

Is hip dysplasia only diagnosed in babies?

While hip dysplasia is often screened for in infancy, milder forms can go undiagnosed until symptoms appear later in adolescence or adulthood.

Will I need a joint replacement?

This depends on the degree of dysplasia and whether secondary arthritis has developed. Dr Arora will assess your individual situation.
